Do you ever just sit and wonder what happened to your life. You know, the plans you dreamed of when you were in your teens. I am having that kind of day, cleaning toilets and emptying diaper pails, comforting Jonah after he bangs his head again while trying to study for my class tonight. I am sitting here and thinking back ten years ago when I thought that total happiness would come from living in a big house, earning the money and flying off to exotic places. Zoom forward 10 years and I am living on base, having never gone anywhere remotely exotic, and am just about the happiest I have been in a long time.
While I try to prevent Jonah's daily attempts at either killing himself or learning to fly (we haven't figured out which one applies yet but hope for the latter) and clean the living room for the umpteenth time today and I realize that this life is much more than I could have dreamed. For me back then, kids were the kiss of death to your social life, and while most of my topics of conversation revolve around him, I have made more friends since having him then I did before. Watching him as he achieves his goals, whether its climbing up onto the sofa unaided to being brave enough to climb up the slide on his own and go down, no longer needing to hold my hand as he does so, these are the moments that I hope I will remember when I am old and he is busy taking care of his own family.
I was reading a question posed in an article that asked people if their house was on fire what would they save and a large amount of them would say their family but then a surprising amount went on about returning to get jewelry, money/wallets, clothes, etc. I sat back and thought about it and I can honestly say that as long as Mike, Jonah and I were all safe, everything else can just burn. It's all stuff, all these things I have spent so much time and money buying, none of it is irreplaceable (apart from some pictures of people passed), but still I can be truly happy with just us, knowing that anything else would be provided for us one way or another. I mean, that's what we have spent the last 9 years paying insurance for right?
I don't know. Maybe it's being 30 and away from family. Maybe it's watching the news and seeing the state of the country and economics right now. But in a time when stuff is valued higher than your own life, you have to wonder at the mindset of some people today.

A whole lot of nothing

Jonah has now gotten himself a magic hat, thanks to the kindness of a friend, he now spends every waking moment of the day wearing a bicycle helmet, if it was up to him he would wear it to bed aswell. I guess it helps limit the amount of times he knocks his head on something while exploring spaces he shouldn't be in, maybe he is just thinking of self preservation, the poor guy whacks his head a couple of times a day, but I guess that is normal for every fearless adventurer desperate to find out what's above and behind. Perhaps he just thinks it's cool and is setting the trend. I'm not sure, I just hope that he lets me take it off when we go out, although it would be an interesting conversation starter, much better than the usual comments we get about his hair colour. Yes it is red, yes mine is brown and Mike is blonde, he gets it from his paternal grandfather and yes I am getting very tired of explaning it to every stranger that likes to bring it up.
After two weeks of being in our new home, we finally began to put some pictures on the wall, leaving me to wonder if we will ever live in a house big enough for them all. There are boxes waiting patiently to be unpacked and a space ready for our new washer and dryer. A certain company needs to be more understanding and deliver a little faster, while I love going over to my friends and spending the day doing laundry, I would much rather be there, or her here, just for the fun conversation and not for the added chore. (Thank you Tina for your patience and kindness) A month seems an awfully long time to wait to wash your clothes, especially when you have to rely on friends or resort to a day out at the coin-op - fun for everyone.
Anyway, Mike is back finally from work and I have to pretend that I have spent the morning working myself to the bone, cleaning and putting away said laundry.

Finally!
So I set up this whole thing and even post a pic of the cheeky one and then the internet gets disconnected for a whole week! I guess it was all for the best as instead of constantly checking my facebook, I managed to unpack a ton of boxes - oh yeah, for those not in the know, we moved on base over the weekend, no more noisy neighbors above us!!
Jonah is loving the space and we have a couple of little play areas outside for him to go crazy in, although they both require going up a hill either one way or the other so he hasn't been able to enjoy his red wagon fully as mummy hasn't quite built up those mummy muscles.
I love being on base though, which is strange as normally I can't stand it, but school is nearby and so is a great friend who's son is Jonah's age, and whether they like it or not, we like our mummy time. It is funny watching them interact, swapping juices and dummy's around.
